About Ear Wax Removal

  • ear wax impaction diagram

    What is ear wax?

Ear wax (cerumen) is a natural, protective substance produced by the outer part of the ear canal. Its made up of old dead skin cells, oily secretions, dust and debris.

Ear wax is very important for ear health as it prevents infection. Ear wax allows the skin to stay moist preventing skin from drying out as well as it trapping foreign bodies and debris and stopping them entering the ear canal. Usually, ear wax works its own way out of the ear through jaw movements when talking and chewing and when it reaches the outside of the ear, it flakes off. However this does not always work and ear wax can become trapped in the ear causing discomfort. The photo above shows ear wax impaction in a patients ear canal.

    What is a typical treatment?

Wizard Clinics strive to safely and professionally clear their patients ear wax concerns. With this service no longer being available on the NHS, we provide this quick and painless microsuction ear wax removal treatment for you.

A typical treatment involves our skilled clinicians using microsuction which has been found to be the safest and quickest method of ear wax removal. Treatments usually last 15-30 minutes.

Occasionally, ear wax can be very compacted and hard and it may be necessary for the patient to use a course of ear drops before the clinician can complete the removal completely. If this is the case, the clinician will arrange another appointment to come and complete the procedure when the wax is softer. To try to prevent this, we recommend using olive oil ear drops or ‘Earol’ for 2 days prior to your appointment if possible. (Olive oil ear drops can be purchased from most pharmacies.)

  • ear swabs for ear infection

    Who needs an ear swab?

Occasionally people are treated for ear infections but their symptoms do not improve. In this case, a swab of the infected ear can be taken and sent to a lab so that the type of infective organism (bacterial/fungal) can be identified. You will receive the results via email and can then pass these onto your GP so that the correct treatment can be established.

Ear Swabs: (to diagnose type of ear infection)

If you have a recurring ear infection, we are able to swab your ear and send the sample off to our partner laboratory to decide whether the infection is Bacterial or Fungal. This allows for you to get the correct antibiotics for your ear infection.

Ear Swab One Ear: £60

Ear Swab Two ears: £90

What to expect after treatment?

Ear wax removal has limited side effects, although some people may experience mild earache, discomfort or dizziness for up to 48 hours post treatment. We recommend keeping the ear canal dry for several days after to avoid infection. Earol is recommended to be used 1-2 times a month to people prone to earwax buildup to avoid further treatments.

Please note…

We currently do not take bookings for the following:

  • under 10 year olds

  • anyone unable to stay still (due to the delicate nature of the earwax removal procedure, all clients will need to be able to keep their head still to prevent damage to their ear)

  • anyone under the influence of alcohol or drugs
